Motorhead were great but the wind was so bad when Maiden were on that it whipped the sound away from the speakers & ruined their set for me.
That's a shame. You see Maiden recently? Are they a bit long in the tooth to put on a good gig? (I don't think that necessarily need app,y, but it wouldn't surprise me)

I take it from the list you didn't see MASTODON?

The whole set was just phenominal. The musicianship was spot on & they sound a lot heavier live. Till is such a great frontman & the show itself was insane. So many pyros, flametowers, fireworks, penis cannons & sodomy (Buch Dich hysterically funny)
The show does look awesome. And that seems to be it, they put on a SHOW. You can even see it so much just in that one video. And I'm not just talking about the equipment, but the performance and interplay on the stage (Till with the keyboard plater, etc.).
Also when we're talking about the super serious Celtic Frost, Rammstein are must the opposite of it. A band with such a sense of fun and humour about what they do.

Seriously John this is one band you HAVE to see live. I'm an old git & like you am blind as well but Rammstein are that good & that special as a band you need to see them live.
You're so right mate. If I ever get going to gigs again Rammstein will be #1 choice by a mile.

In truth I was being kind to Maiden just because... well they are Maiden! The weather was really bad & affecting the sound but the set wasn't great. Too many poor songs IMHO. Starting with Moonchild wasn't good & songs like The Clairvoyant, Can I Play With Madness & Wasted Years aren't great Maiden songs. They did sometimes show what they can do, Aces High & The Trooper were flawless. I was lucky enough to be at Hammersmith for The World Slavery tour, now that was stunning, Rhyme Of The Ancient Mariner was worth the ticket price alone.
I must also admit the Spitfire buzzing the crowd just before the band came on was awesome & took me so much by surprise I nearly soiled myself!

Really wanted to see them but was so soaked & cold we all decieded to go back to the tent, grab some dry clothes & make it back for Motorhead, who were so superb even the weather paid its respect & stopped raining while they were on.

I truly cannot find enough adjectives to describe just how good they were. I have seen probably over 1'000 live bands & been lucky to be at some stunning shows. Slayer on The Reign In Pain tour, Metallica on both The Puppets & Justice tours, NIN's Fragility tour etc. Nothing & no one has come close to Rammstein for a live show. Not only were they note perfect & highly professional, they seemed to be genuinely enjoying themselves. The show itself was staggering. I cannot even begin to describe the insane amount of flames, fireworks & effects. But my friends reaction to Till "sodomising" the keyboardist with a fake penis that he then squirted himself & the audience with was hysterical. At the end of the show when Till finally spoke to the audience, describing us as "fucking awesome" & thanking us seemed so sincere. Maybe because they are German & sing mainly in German this comment seemed so genuine. On the walk back to the campsite literally everyone was buzzing, proclaiming they had just seen the best show Download has ever had.
I really hope they tour soon & you get a ticket, I know damn well I will be going.

I just have to include this, a fantastic combination of a haunting song with clips from "Metropolis". The instrumental of this song is used in "The Abominable Dr. Phibes".
"Close Your Eyes" by Ray Noble Orchestra, with vocal by Al Bowlly

The ill-fated Al Bowlly's voice might be familiar. One of his hit songs is used prominently in Stanley Kubrick's "The Shining".
